Discover the living practice of celebrated landscape designer and multidisciplinary artist Bernard Trainor, who shares a life shaped by the land — from personal garden experiments to the refined, site-driven work of GROUND STUDIO.

Based on California’s Central Coast, Trainor works from his private garden studio where he moves fluidly between painting, sculpture, design, and installation — each medium in quiet conversation with the others. His work is held in private collections and has been exhibited throughout California.

This talk is moderated by award-winning architect Jess Field, the principal of Field Architecture, a Palo Alto–based firm known for designing buildings in close conversation with the land. His approach, shaped by a South African upbringing and his father Stan’s mentorship under Louis Kahn, is grounded in stewardship and sitespecificity.

This conversation explores how Trainor’s daily practice — sketching, building, planting — informs a distinct, evolving vision of landscape.

Crevice is a solo exhibition at Woods + Dangaran in Los Angeles that explores the intersection of — and constant equilibrium between — natural and human-built systems. What was originally a natural system, then adapted to human needs, becomes something entirely new: a collaboration, a distinct ecotype created through the dialogue between humans and their environment. A push and pull, like tides. Throughout, Trainor remains curious about the possibilities: the adaptive way we create new evolutionary systems through resilience and opportunism.
